ROMANIAN OIL COMPANIES GETTING RICH THANKS TO LOW TAXES?

Prices of oil in Romania, without taxes, are much higher than in Germany, Austria, France, Sweden or Great Britain.
Romania has the lowest prices of fuel compared to the other countries in the EU, due to the low taxes collected by the state, not to policies applied by oil companies. The state uses taxation to protect citizens from expensive fuel. On the other hand, with the state at a loss, oil companies working in Romanian market are more than happy because of the profits they make - comments Kapital weekly.

The Oil Bulletin, published by the Directorate-General for Energy and Transport of the European Commission (EC), aims to provide greater transparency of oil prices and stabilization of internal markets. According to the price-list of August 24, the average price of 95 octane petrol in Romania was set at 924 Euro/1,000 litres, which is lower than Bulgaria (924 Euro) or Hungary (1135 Euro), and much lower compared to France (1273 Euro), Germany (1332 Euro) or Italy (1296 Euro/1,000 l).
It allowed the oil companies in Romanian market to come forward with claims that Romania has the lowest prices of oil derivatives in the EU, especially when needing it to justify new increases of prices of fuel. Reality is somewhat different, Kapital weekly comments.

ECONOMY MINISTER ADRIEAN VIDEANU: NEW ENERGY STRATEGY IS BEING PREPARED

The global economic crisis caused tectonic shifts in all economic sectors, and energy sector was not spared. Earlier projections for consumption of electricity are not valid anymore, and that is just argument in favour of a brand new energy strategy. We expect the new draft of the strategy in the second half of the year, and we don't intend to prepare it just to put my name on it, but because the changing realities demand a new paper.

RUSSIA / EUROPE
IS MOSCOW STILL ENERGY BULLY IN THE EYES OF BRUSSELS?

With the arrival of winter, many residents of Central and Eastern Europe are probably recalling last year’s cold, when Russia decided to stop gas supplies to Ukraine. That was a harsh reminder that gas is currently Kremlin’s most important political instrument, used by Moscow to bring back the privilege it once had in the countries it now deems are in other camp. If Russia is allowed to continue imposing her rules in Europe’s energy supply sector, the result will be very expensive, not only for Europe, but for Russia as well.
